That was how I got into all of this. We bought solarwinds 2 months ago. We got all our nodes in and setup default monitoring yadda yadda yadda and I noticed some of these things. I created an application group for one of our apps and noticed the whole root cause analysis and how I could stuff that right in the alert email. That got me thinking on coming up with a comprehensive list of all switches and switchports it ran through, all connections and services it connected to, both inside and outside my network. Even monitoring on this level where I can make the same connection the application is making, getting me out of just simple process monitors and generic monitoring. I created my map last week while I was awaiting the database team to give me creds to the database and I think it's great I can look on a map and see where we might be having issues, either hard failures or warnings for possible performance issues. It really gives you an in depth view if you're willing to take the time to configure it all.
